It's from the writings of a pulp-era author and madman by the name of H.P. Lovecraft. He was a total nutter whose basic underlying aegis was the casual hostility of a universe in which humanity is insignificant, powerless and irrelevent. Much as Tolkien started the whole "wizards doing wizardly things" meme going, if you see "tentacled horrors" in a scary movie, this's descended from Lovecraft's mythos.

And if one of our kids ever says anything like "stupendous and unheard-of splendors await me below, and I shall seek them soon", can we trade him in for one not possessed by a hell god? Unless he's a teen-ager, in which case I'll congratulate him on his excellent vocabulary :)
