If you listen to the recording of this firefight, there's a BRRRRAP that sounds a lot like a vulcan-phalanx cannon, but those things aren't exactly man-portable. Anyone hazard a guess?

That is exactly what it was. Specifically, it was an M214 (I think that's correct) mingun. You can see it a couple of times, looks like a squat, short but very thick barreled MG with a very shiny belt of ammo (which is the feeder). Shoots a 5.56mm round and has the same rate of fire. Its Humvee mounted, so there is your mobility. The other weapons were M2 .50 cals, M240B Medium MGs, and then the standard small arms. I've see parts of this before, some of the explosions in the background were from Spooky Gunships (aka the new Puff the Magic Dragons AC-130 gunships).
There used to be a 7.62mm version of the M214 (the M134 I think) but I think it was relegated to gunships and NVA control rather than badgers.
I do remember though seeing a Monster Garage where Jesse James had a M214 mounted on the top of a SUV. He used it to wipe out a failed project. I don't remember what the project was but the effect the M214 had on the failed car project was...well, awesome.
Well that is the general effect we are going for when we use it. Any moron can bring a MG to a gunfight. But only the US can legitmately say we actually overkill the concept.
If you look close there is part of the clip (I think they didn't cut it out) where a JAM militia-man runs around a corner with an AK and gets killed so fast he doesn't get noticed unless you look for it. I know one of the guys who was on a co-team to the one that actually took this video, so he showed me the slowed-down version. But its hard to see even then. This guy quite literally never knew what killed him, he popped up and got flagged by about 10 of the lasers and shot by everyone. The lasers are infrared so he never saw them while running up to the gunfight and didn't realize just what was waiting for him.

They should make a civilian version for, um... badger control, yeah that's it: badger control. :)
