Sons of Gods

A brief snippet of a W.H. Auden poem I admire:
The sons of Hermes love to play
And only do their best when they
Are told they oughtn’t;
Apollo’s children never shrink
From boring jobs but have to think
Their work important.
Hermes or Apollo? I know from which I come....

Hmm... I'm definitely one of Apollo's brood :-) I love that poem.

hm...I don't seem to fit either, unless "play", "important" and "boring" are given meanings they don't normally have.:) Put me with Hestia, tending the fire.

I don't know.

Heh. Given that I already have a stuffed owl companion, my brood is pretty obvious...:-)

That's an awful thing to say about your significant other - he's a crow not an owl. :)

Anna, that some kind of high-falutin' double-entendre with Oscar and a mythological reference, or just Oscar? :)

Gosh,I was not even thinking of a double-entendre at all...You guys oughta get yer minds outta gutter...:-) That's Oscar and Greek mythology, thank you very much. ::sniff, sniff::

Cool, but for those of us who got a sheet of paper instead of an education, where do Oscars fit in Greek mythology?

Madeleine said...

Why, I believe they are the noble companions of the serious minded, of which Oscar is a most heroic example :-) That said, I'm no classicist so I look to Anna for verification!

Owl is the companion of Athena, goddess of wisdom and wars fought using one's brains, as opposed to mindless carnage, which is presided over by Ares...
